Monday Love: Beatrix Ost

Absolutely fabulous!

Meet the artist Beatrix Ost, who, at age 71 is inspiring in every way. Not only in the way she dresses and looks in these pictures, but also in her fearless confrontation with life and the way it's expressed in her art. A project of hers that especially appeals to me is "Intimacy - 15 minutes of drawing" - something i'll take on a a challenge for the week to come. The drawings shown above are from a series shown on her website - really worth exploring.

She says: "What is intimacy, after all? Is it the sharing of the same thoughts and feelings? Is it being told an unmentionable secret? Is it the act of sex? No, it is stillness: silent, motionless meditation on the sitter's part, accompanied only by the singing of graphite on paper. A kind of Platonic camera, tracing the most essential outlines of a life. One person said: it is not stolen time, it is time agreed upon. Taken deliberately out of the bustle of the ordinary. Entering a time capsule willingly, cutting everything off, just to be still. A luxury we hardly grant ourselves. In these fifteen minutes we simply are.15 meditative minutes of intimate drawing can be seen as a correlative to Andy Warhol's loud and public 15 minutes of fame. They ebb and flow in inverse proportion."

What would 15 minutes of intimacy mean to you - what would you choose to do?

  1. Martina,

THIS has to be, no...it IS my favorite post that you have ever shared. ALL your posts are remarkably beautiful...for YOUR ART IS EXACTLY what this fantastic woman is describing. But the reason why I love this post THE MOST is because YOU ARE sharing what she is ARTICULATING what it is that YOU and the rest of us who are aspiring or professional artists DO. See, I am so charged up when I learn WHY and HOW someone great does something. This is superb. Remarkable. And isn't SHE just smashingly beautiful??? I am inspired so much ....THANK YOU DEAR FRIEND and YES, we have had LOVELY weather for about two days again and I am loving my summer...how it would be magical to meet you...THANK YOU MY FRIEND!!! 9. Oh dear friend, truly, this is quite an inspiration. I am FEEDING myself and FILLING up with good literature that is nourishing my writer's mind. The next step that is quite easy, is to discuss what I learn. But the most difficult and most lonely is still yet to be....to actually sit and compose what I want...but what a magnificent summer day we are having here....just wiling away the hours and soaking in the rest. My best to you dearest one! Anita

  18. Very beautiful post Martina! Beatrix is right, stillness is essential to intimacy.
One of my dear friends has always said that very, very busy people must fear intimacy... She may be right about that!
*hope your week is going wonderfully*

  21. Very inspiring lady! Her pastel artwork is so soft and pretty. I love it that we can create art at any age. What a joy that fact is!!!

My 15 minutes would be taking a stroll (with my sweetie) on our walking trail right next to the water. Hand-in-hand..watching the sun go down!

Blessings to you for a beautiful day!

    xoxo...Gloria
